Notice of Expanded Methylaluminoxane Production Capacity

Tosoh Finechem Corporation (Tosoh Finechem) has significantly increased its production capacity for methylaluminoxane (MAO). MAO is an auxiliary catalyst for metallocene-catalyzed high-performance polyolefin (PO) resins, such as polyethylene, polypropylene, and PO elastomer.

Conventionally, Ziegler-Natta catalysts using alkylaluminum have been indispensable for polymerizing PO resins and synthetic rubber. And Tosoh Finechem has provided a stable supply of the alkylaluminum used in Ziegler-Natta catalysts in response to customer demand.

Recent years, however, have witnessed a rapidly growing preference among customers for metallocene-catalyzed high-performance PO resins, which feature superior functionality to Ziegler-Natta–catalyzed PO resins. As an auxiliary catalyst for metallocene-catalyzed high-performance PO resins, MAO is expected to see demand grow at an equally high rate.

Tosoh Finechem has been producing MAO at its plant in Shunan City, Yamaguchi Prefecture, since the 1990s. To meet increasingly strong demand for MAO throughout Asia, the company has changed its product portfolio to concentrate its management resources on significantly bolstering its production of MAO. Tosoh Finechem also established an integrated production system for trimethylaluminum to ensure a stable supply of that raw material to the market.

Tosoh Finechem’s MAO product line includes polymethylaluminoxane (PMAO), which is mainly used for linear low-density polyethylene (LLDPE); modified methylaluminoxane (MMAO), which is mainly used for PO elastomers; and solid methylaluminoxane (SMAO), a special grade of MAO solidified using Tosoh Finechem’s proprietary technology. The diversity of this product line underscores Tosoh Finechem’s aim to be the Asian market’s top manufacturer of MAO by responding to various customer needs.
