- Dispersing and cleaning agents: Due to its structure free of alkali metals, it can be used as a raw material for dispersing and cleaning agents, particularly for electronic materials.
- Acrylic emulsions: With its sulfonate structure that suppresses hygroscopicity, it is suitable for the production of water-based paints, adhesives, and other products with improved water resistance.
- Other: Antistatic agent, fiber modification, water treatment agents such as ion-exchange membranes

SPINOMAR® AmSS
Sulfonic acid monomer soluble in organic solvents
AmSS is a new product in which the counter cation of Spinomar® NaSS (Sodium p-Styrenesulfonate) is ammonium type. Previously, AmSS was difficult to obtain industrially, but our company has established a proprietary industrial manufacturing method for AmSS, enabling a stable supply.
AmSS has features such as excellent solubility in organic solvents and not containing alkali metals in its structure, and is expected to be used in applications where NaSS was difficult to use.

Main Uses

Feature
AmSS, like NaSS, contains a sulfonic acid group and an aromatic ring within its molecular structure, exhibiting high surface activity and heat resistance (up to approximately 300°C). Additionally, the vinyl group attached to the aromatic ring possesses radical polymerization properties similar to styrene.
AmSS demonstrates superior solubility in various organic solvents compared to NaSS (Fig.1) and exhibits improved hygroscopicity (water resistance) (Fig.2).
Example of solution polymerization (copolymerization with styrene)
AmSS enables copolymerization with hydrophobic monomers in organic solvents, which was challenging with NaSS. In copolymerization with styrene, it produces an organic solvent-soluble random copolymer (Fig.3).
