Our production facilities are located within or adjacent to Tosoh’s Nanyo Complex, and as a member of the Tosoh Group, we are actively working to reduce our environmental impact. For example, wastewater generated during manufacturing processes is strictly managed—not only in compliance with legal standards for the Seto Inland Sea and local government agreements, but also under even more stringent internal standards to ensure water quality. In addition, we set internal targets for greenhouse gas emissions and are working toward their reduction.
Our core product group—fluorinated compounds—is closely linked to environmental regulations. Since the 1970s, concerns have grown over ozone layer depletion and global warming caused by substances like halons¹ and CFCs². Following the adoption of the Montreal Protocol in 1987, the production and import of these substances began to be restricted. As a result, we were forced to discontinue halon production, which had been a major product at the time, and to replace carbon tetrachloride—previously used as a solvent in NaSS production—with alternatives due to regulatory changes.
Later, substitute CFCs with lower ozone depletion potential (ODP) and global warming potential (GWP) came into use. However, with increasing global awareness of environmental issues, even these alternatives are now becoming subject to regulation.
More recently, stricter regulations on fluorinated compounds, known as PFAS regulations, are emerging—particularly in Europe. At Tosoh Finechem, we closely monitor such regulatory trends and strive to develop next-generation products that comply with environmental standards. Through these efforts, we aim to reduce environmental impact while continuing our business activities, contributing to the realization of a sustainable society.
*¹ Halons: Halogenated hydrocarbons in which hydrogen atoms are replaced with halogens, including bromine. *² CFCs (Chlorofluorocarbons): Halogenated hydrocarbons where the halogens are only fluorine and chlorine.
