The alkyl aluminum compounds we handle are extremely hazardous substances that spontaneously ignite upon exposure to air. With the slogan “The World’s Safest Alkyl Aluminum Plant,” we conduct our daily production and shipping activities with the utmost care.
However, there have been serious accidents involving alkyl aluminum in the past. On December 3, 2007, during the plant startup following routine maintenance, a pipeline ruptured and leaking alkyl aluminum spontaneously ignited, causing a fire. The fire was intense and resulted in a serious accident with four people injured. Since then, we have designated December 3 as “Tosoh Finechem Disaster Prevention Day” and have been working on enhancing our safety measures and conducting educational activities to pass on the lessons learned, so that such an accident never happens again.
Specifically, our operators wear flame-resistant aramid fiber work uniforms at all times. When handling alkyl aluminum, they also wear protective gear consisting of aluminized fire-resistant suits, face shields, and long leather gloves to ensure heat and fire resistance. In addition, we own a specially equipped fire engine fitted with powder fire extinguishing agents, prepared for emergency situations.
We also conduct an annual fire safety drill known as the “Fire Demo,” which involves extinguishing alkyl aluminum fires. Through demonstrations using powder extinguishers and perlite for smothering fires, we raise awareness among users and transporters about the dangers of alkyl aluminum and the proper methods for safe handling.
